Koufonisia
Koufonisia is a small group of islands located in the Aegean Sea, part of Greece's Cyclades archipelago. It consists of two main islands: Pano Koufonisi (Upper Koufonisi) and Kato Koufonisi (Lower Koufonisi), along with several smaller islets. Known for its stunning natural beauty, the islands feature crystal-clear turquoise waters, secluded beaches, and rugged landscapes, making it a hidden paradise for those seeking tranquillity and authenticity.
Pano Koufonisi, the larger of the two islands, is known for its charming traditional Cycladic architecture, narrow winding streets, and vibrant nightlife. The island is popular among travellers who enjoy a laid-back atmosphere combined with delicious seafood and breathtaking views. Kato Koufonisi, the smaller, uninhabited island, is famous for its pristine beaches and untouched natural surroundings, perfect for exploration and relaxation.
With a rich history that includes ancient ruins and a serene, unspoiled environment, Koufonisia offers visitors an idyllic retreat where they can connect with nature and experience the traditional Greek island lifestyle. The islands remain relatively underdeveloped, ensuring a peaceful and authentic experience, far from the mass tourism found on other more famous Greek islands.
There are some spectacular beaches throughout the Small Cyclades and Koufonisia offers some of the best. Parianos in the north west is a small, picturesque fishing bay with a wide sandy beach that remains sheltered from the wind. Clear shallow waters make it ideal for families.
To the east of the island are some remote hidden coves where sometimes visitors can be the only ones on the beach. Alternatively, take one of the boats that run regularly to the uninhabited Kato Koufonisia where there are also some beaches and stunning views over the neighbouring islands.
