Sikinos

Nestled between the islands of Folegandros and Ios, Sikinos stands as a bastion of peace and traditional Greek charm. One of the most secluded islands in the Cyclades, it offers visitors a unique blend of untouched beauty and authentic experiences. Terraced hillsides, ancient stone walls, and countless chapels adorn its rugged landscape, all surrounded by the shimmering aquamarine waters of the Aegean Sea.

The journey begins at the picturesque port of Alopronia (also known as Skala). This quaint harbour features a handful of welcoming tavernas, traditional Cycladic houses, and a serene sandy beach. From here, boats (operating subject to demand) operate to Agios Nikolaos, the island’s largest and most inviting beach, where golden sands meet crystal-clear waters.

A short 3.5 km journey from Alopronia arrives at the hilltop fortress village of Chora, also known as Kastro. Perched high on a ridge with sweeping views of the Aegean, Chora is beautiful to explore the quaint winding street. There are a handful of tavernas, small shops, and a post office, all exuding an air of timeless simplicity far removed from the crowds of mass tourism.

For an unforgettable experience, visit the fortress monastery of Zoodochos Pighi, located to the west of Chora. Its breathtaking panoramic views, especially during sunset, make it a must-see destination.

Sikinos is a walker’s paradise, with trails that weave through its rugged terrain and offer stunning vistas at every turn. The descent from Chora back to Alopronia takes about an hour on foot, but the journey rewards you with unparalleled views of the island’s natural splendour.

This island is a retreat for those seeking calm, offering clean waters for swimming, scenic walks, and the serenity of an unspoiled Cycladic environment. The dramatic northwest cliffs, where Chora clings to the rocky slopes, add to Sikinos’ striking character.

Sikinos remains a sanctuary of traditional Greek life, untouched by the trappings of modern tourism. It’s a place to escape the stresses of daily life and be immersed in the simple beauty of the Aegean. With its stone-built terraces, whitewashed chapels, and stony landscapes, Sikinos is a haven for authentic Cycladic charm and peaceful escapism.

Sikinos can be twinned with Folegandros, Milos, Kimolos, Syros, Ios, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Athens – although some of these journeys may involve fairly lengthy ferry crossings.
