Iraklia

Iraklia is a quiet island in the Cyclades, Greece, known for its peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and traditional Greek charm. The island covers about 18 square kilometers and has fewer than 100 residents, which adds to its peaceful, unhurried atmosphere. Part of the Lesser Cyclades group, Iraklia is located between and accessible from Naxos and Amorgos, offering an authentic and less touristy experience compared to some of the larger Greek island characterised by rugged terrain, beautiful hills, and dramatic cliffs. Its beaches, though small, are known for their crystal-clear waters and unspoiled beauty. Notable beaches on Iraklia include Livadi, Agios Georgios, and Panagia. Visitors can enjoy the stunning coastline, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxation.

Iraklia’s main settlement is Chora, a picturesque village with traditional whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and charming tavernas. The island also has smaller villages like Agios Georgios and Mersini, where visitors can experience authentic Greek island life. The island has a rich history, with evidence of ancient settlements and Byzantine ruins and is home to several small churches and chapels, including the Monastery of Panagia, a notable religious site – It’s culture remains deeply tied to its maritime and agricultural traditions.

While the island doesn’t offer a bustling nightlife, it provides a perfect setting for nature lovers and those looking to disconnect. Hiking, walking, and exploring the island’s natural beauty are popular activities as well as taking a boat trip to other nearby islands, such as Schinoussa and Koufonisia.

Our Recommended Iraklia Properties

There are just 2 villages on the island – Chora and Agios Georgios which is also the main port.  The beautiful scenery and landscape of Iraklia has lots of greenery and vegetation and the relatively small size of the island makes it idea for trekking and exploring.  There are also some beautiful beaches on the island – both pebble and sandy.  Some are only accessible by small boat.  The clear waters that surround the island are perfect for snorkelling – there is even the wreck of a World War 2 German aircraft off one of the beaches.

There is a charming selection of traditional tavernas around the harbour and in Chora where visitors can sample some of the local cuisine including fresh fish and seafood.
