Anafi

Anafi is a small island and part of Greece's Cyclades group. Located in the southern Aegean Sea situated to the southeast of Thira, Santorini and to the northeast of Crete. With an area of about 38 square kilometers, Anafi is a modestly sized island, making it easy to explore in a short amount of time. It lies in a relatively isolated area of the Aegean, contributing to its quiet and undisturbed atmosphere. This charming island is known for its peaceful ambiance, beautiful landscapes, and historical significance, Anafi is a great discovery for those looking to escape the crowds of more popular Greek islands.

The island features rugged terrain, with steep hills and cliffs, particularly around the highest peak, Mount Kalamos, which rises to 580 meters. The island is home to pristine beaches, clear turquoise waters, and a generally untouched natural environment.

Though less famous than other Cycladic islands, Anafi has a rich history. It is home to ancient ruins, such as a temple dedicated to Apollo, and its architecture includes traditional Cycladic houses, narrow streets, and whitewashed churches, the village of Chora is the main settlement.

Amphitheatrically built on the remains of a Venetian castle, Chora the main town of Anafi has narrow alleyways, little whitewashed houses and the vivid colours of the gardens in bloom all topped off with limitless views over the Aegean sea. The tallest monolith in the eastern Mediterranean stretching to 460m high is at Kalamos at the eastern end of the island and makes for an incredibly impressive sight. Panagia Kalamiotissa located on the rocks at Kalamos remains the most important religious monument on the island. The Cave of Drakontospilo which can only be reached on foot is a fascinating spectacle with stalactites and stalagmites along with the school of seals that make frequent appearances here.

The beaches of Anafi with their crystal clear waters are generally crowd-free even in the height of the summer. On the south coast are the sandy beaches of Agios Nikolaos, Katsouni and Klisidi. The endless beach of Roukounas is pebbly and lined with tamarisk trees and there are the magnificent golden coasts of Flamourou and Prasies.
