Traditional Beach cave house, sleeps 2, room only
The Elephant Beach House is a unique two-person retreat located in the colourful coastal area of Sirmata Goupa on the secluded island of Kimolos, part of the Cyclades. Positioned just one kilometre from Psathi, the island’s small port on the southeastern coast, this distinctive property offers a rare opportunity to stay directly on the beach in a setting defined by natural beauty and historical charm.
Named after a nearby rock formation shaped like an elephant, the beach is a quiet and scenic spot that reflects the unspoiled character of the island. The property itself is a former "sirma"—a traditional cave-like shelter carved into soft rock, originally used by fishermen to store and protect boats from harsh winter conditions. The Elephant Beach House is the first sirma in the area to be sustainably restored and converted into an environmentally conscious holiday residence.
The interior of the house measures approximately 13 square metres and has been carefully designed to provide a simple yet comfortable living space for two guests. It features a queen-size bed and a compact bathroom with a shower, making it well-suited for those seeking a peaceful, minimalist escape close to the sea. With its direct access to the sandy beach and uninterrupted views of the Aegean, the residence offers an intimate connection with the surrounding landscape.
The location is ideal for those arriving by boat, with easy access from the nearby port. From Psathi, a short drive or walk follows the main road towards Chorio, the island’s central village. Clear signage directs visitors past the public parking area and onward to the beach at Goupa, where the property is located directly on the shoreline.
Chorio, the heart of local life on Kimolos, offers a range of essential services and traditional businesses. Facilities include a community clinic, post office, pharmacy, as well as bakeries, general stores, cafés, tavernas, mini markets, bars, and small gift shops. The nearby village of Agios Nikolaos also provides a petrol station for those exploring the island by car.
The Elephant Beach House represents a rare blend of heritage, sustainability, and seafront living. Its transformation from a humble boat shelter into a thoughtfully restored residence showcases the quiet charm of Kimolos and offers an ideal base for those seeking tranquillity and simplicity in a naturally beautiful setting. With its beachfront location and historical character, the property delivers an authentic island experience in one of the Cyclades’ most peaceful corners.
